Angry Birds for Android Devices
As an American tourist who clearly didn’t know any better, I found myself last February on a train in England during the end-of-the-day rush hour. At standing room only, I was crowded into an isle with numerous other travelers, everyone trying to figure out the least awkward object to stare at as we grappled with the strange intimacy of public transportation.
I ended up looking at a man’s cell phone screen, watching him play a rather heated round of a video game. When I asked him what it was, he shook his head and said, “I don’t know – but it’s damned addicting!”
It turns out that the game in question was Rovio Mobile’s mega-hit sensation Angry Birds, and he’s not the only one who has been sucked in; at four million active users logging in over 3.33 million hours of gameplay per day, the game is one of the most successful apps in the history of smart phone development.
Not that you need a smart phone to play. After Angry Birds’ overwhelming initial success on the Apple iOS system in 2009, the game is now available for the Android smart phone system (among other smart phone options), Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PSP, Play Station 3, and Google Chrome. Rovio’s latest adaptation, still in development for the moment, is for the extremely popular social networking service Facebook.
So what exactly is all this hype about? The premise of Angry Birds is fairly straightforward: players control a set of irate avians attempting to retrieve a series of eggs, which have been stolen from them by a group of green pigs.
(Still with me so far?) To do this, the birds are fired at the pigs and the structures the pigs hide behind by a slingshot. The aim of each level is to defeat all the pigs before the player runs out of birds. As more levels are unlocked, different colored birds become available for game play – the various colors correspond with different special abilities.
Similarly, pigs vary in their difficulty to defeat based upon what they’re wearing: pigs with crowns can sustain the most damage, though you also should watch out for pigs sporting helmets and armor! The pigs’ structures also change over time, making them easier or more difficult to destroy.
Can’t get enough of Angry Birds? Never fear: Rovio has that covered, too, offering various add- ons to the original game for download as well as special editions, such as Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Season. And for those with serious Angry Bird fever, keep an eye out: rumor has it there’s even a feature-length film in the works.
